You don’t need to register or file any paperwork with the federal government to establish a sole proprietorship. if you start a business without creating another business structure and you’re the sole owner, you are automatically considered a sole proprietor.

Whether your business needs an ein depends on its structure, not on whether it has a dba. sole proprietorships with a dba generally do not need a separate ein; their tax identification number is the owner's social security number, unless they plan to hire employees. similarly, single-member llcs usually don't need an ein, but one is required if the llc intends to hire employees or open a separate business bank account. most other business entities, however, do require an ein.

Even if your business is a sole proprietorship, you should have a separate business bank account to help separate your business and personal income and expenses. this will help you properly report your business income on your personal tax returns. most banks will allow you to open an account for your sole proprietorship using your social security number.
